The day after a wedding in Rogoznica, the maid of honour told me, “The food was perfect.”
I smiled because in Dalmatia, people always talk about food. Not only during the wedding, but the next day too, and sometimes years later.
Food has always been part of how we welcome people here.
At a wedding in Split or anywhere along the Dalmatian coast, it often begins with fritule and kroštule, small traditional pastries that disappear from the table almost as quickly as they arrive. Then comes local wine, poured generously and shared among family and friends.
And then dinner.
Traditional Dalmatian Dishes Guests Never Forget
Fresh fish, caught that very morning and prepared simply with olive oil and a touch of sea salt.
Or pašticada, one of the most beloved dishes of Dalmatian cuisine. Beef is slowly cooked for hours in a rich sauce made with red wine, dried plums, root vegetables and spices until it becomes so tender it can almost be cut with a fork.
Served with homemade gnocchi, it is one of those dishes guests remember long after they return home.
Later, rafioli, rožata and modern desserts share the same table.
I love that balance between old and new, tradition and celebration.
Why Food Is an Important Part of a Destination Wedding in Croatia
Many couples choose a destination wedding in Croatia because of the sea, sunshine and beautiful locations.
But what often stays with their guests are the flavours of Dalmatia: fresh fish from the Adriatic, vegetables and herbs from local markets, a glass of Dalmatian wine, pašticada prepared with patience and time, and rafioli, traditional almond-filled pastries whose recipes have been passed down through generations.
Maybe that’s what the maid of honour meant.
The food was perfect.
The aroma of fresh fish, the flavour of pašticada, a glass of wine shared by the sea, and a table filled with dishes prepared from ingredients that had been at the local market only hours before.
